Why should men get facials?
If you’ve never had a facial before, you’re missing out. It’s relaxing, you get professional advice and your skin will look and feel better. This post is dedicated to all the guys out there who would like clear, healthy, and strong skin. (Ladies, feel free to pass this on.) Men are flocking to spas for all kinds of treatments, including facials. The International Spa Association latest study shows that 47% of spa goers are men, and for good reason.
Believe it or not, there are structural differences between men and women’s skin. Men produce testosterone and because of this, the texture of their skin is tougher, their collagen density is greater and they also produce a higher level of sebum. So often we observe men aging at a slower rate than women when it comes to the dermis (George Clooney anyone?). This slower aging process in the long term is counterbalanced by short term issues such as constant shaving, sun damage, in-grown hairs, razor burn, acne, under-eye circles, and skin sensitivity.
A 30 minute facial, even just once a month, can offer both short and long term benefits that include; less in-grown hairs, a smoother easier shave, and overall reduction in large pores that eliminate the need to shave as often and reduce inflammation that leads to breakouts. A 60 minute facial offers the added benefit of a lymphatic drainage massage that soothes the skin and allows you to take time for yourself to decompress.
How to prepare for a men’s facial.
- Follow your normal skin care routine the day of the facial, but do not exfoliate for a least a few days prior to your appointment.
- Shave; if there is too much stubble it makes it harder to treat the area effectively. If you have a beard the esthetician will typically not work in that area except to apply beard oil to help soften hair to help with ingrown hairs.
- Be prepared to talk about your skincare routine, the products you use and any concerns you have.
- If you have acne, extractions are likely. Consider booking an acne treatment or a longer facial (not an express).
Bottom line, facials aren’t just for the ladies… and everyone appreciate a fresh face. Elixir estheticians are here for you with any questions or concerns.
